What We Do...
The world began to become civilized by gradually passing through the Stone Age, the Pastoral Age, the Agricultural Age, and the Modern Age. In passing through these ages, the foundation for civilization was created by using hand signals and tribal languages to communicate with each other. In the Stone Age, tribes operated within their tribe for protection and food. When they reached the Pastoral Age, human society evolved to the point where it surpassed the power of the legs and arms that operated in the Stone Age and tamed animals to perform those tasks and made them do the work. Then, as man adapted his diet to grains, he entered the Agricultural Age. With the advent of that phenomenon, human society had to face constant conflicts and struggles over land rights in the Agricultural Age. Through this, the man who was able to organize people became the ruler of the state. The ruler was called the king. Those states were spread across the continents of the world, and the strength and influence of those states were determined by the prosperity gained through trade.
Among the states of the world, crossing the sea was essential for intercontinental trade. For this, the creation of strong ships required for maritime traffic and knowledge of the sea were important factors. The leading ocean in intercontinental trade was the Indian Ocean. All continents are connected to each other through the Indian Ocean. With the victory of the Ottoman Turks in the Crusades in 1453, European nations were unable to reach the Red Sea region. Because of this, European nations had to find other sea routes to reach the Indian Ocean. Here, Christopher Columbus, while traveling to India with a fleet of ships from Portugal in 1465, was able to find an island in the West Indies. Christopher Columbus thought that this was the island west of India. Thus, the American West Indies were named the Indian Islands. After that, after landing in America, they saw that the people there were red-skinned people, so they were named Red Indians. Thus, even today, the native Americans are addressed as Red Indians. Christopher Columbus was able to land in America. Because of the importance of trade in the Indian Ocean. Thus, the importance of the Indian Ocean has had a great impact on the civilization of the world. In particular, the most important intermediate maritime center in the Indian Ocean was Sri Lanka, and through this, evidence has been found that Sri Lanka has been involved in trade since ancient times, up to 5000 – 6000 years ago.
Although the world became civilized independently of each other, cultural factors caused them to maintain contact with each other. The nations of the world have their own cultural factors. In particular, the largest cultural event in the world to maintain cooperation and participation between nations is the Olympic Games. Also, through art and literature, sensitivity and spiritual ties between nations were established.
The high evolution of human society means the inheritance of a high culture. When a human being is considered high, it means the emergence of a cultural man through the discipline, discipline, maturity, and sense of humor of a human being. Accordingly, in order to maintain human society peacefully, the Sri Lankan civil society must win the creation of a cultural man. The Daraniyagala Foundation, through the fields of culture and art, aims to prepare the necessary foundation to create a high cultural human society.
