SOME INSIGHTS
What We Focus...
Zoology is the scientific study of animals, including their behavior, physiology, genetics, and ecological interactions. In Sri Lanka, zoology plays a crucial role in understanding and conserving the island’s rich biodiversity. As a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot, Sri Lanka is home to a vast range of endemic and endangered species, from the iconic Sri Lankan elephant and leopard to rare amphibians, birds, and marine life. With diverse ecosystems such as tropical rainforests, mangroves, wetlands, and coral reefs, the country provides a unique environment for studying animal life and its intricate relationships with nature.
At the Deraniyagala Foundation, we are dedicated to the research, documentation, and conservation of Sri Lanka’s remarkable zoological heritage. Inspired by the pioneering work of Dr. P.E.P. Deraniyagala, a leading zoologist and paleontologist, we strive to advance scientific knowledge and promote the protection of wildlife. Our work involves studying various animal species, conducting field research, analyzing fossil records, and exploring prehistoric life to gain deeper insights into Sri Lanka’s natural history.
Beyond research, we actively contribute to wildlife conservation by raising awareness about endangered species, supporting habitat restoration projects, and advocating for sustainable practices that promote human-wildlife coexistence. Through education, community engagement, and scientific collaboration, we aim to ensure that Sri Lanka’s rich animal diversity is preserved for future generations.
Our Goals
- Protecting endangered and endemic species through research and conservation efforts.
- Encouraging responsible interactions between people and nature to minimize conflicts.
- Spreading knowledge about Sri Lanka’s zoology to inspire future generations of conservationists.
- Facilitating studies on biodiversity, ecosystems, and prehistoric zoology to expand our understanding of Sri Lanka’s rich natural heritage.
